Most "things to do" roundups for our corner of Prince William County read like they were written by someone passing through on I-66. They list Jiffy Lube Live, a winery an hour out, and call it a summer.
What actually makes summer here work is smaller and closer. From the Heritage Hunt gate, three of the season's best standing appointments sit inside a five-mile radius: a Sunday farmers market on Washington Street, seven miles of trails at a privately protected preserve, and a Town-sponsored concert that shuts down a block of downtown one August afternoon. String them together and you have a Sunday. Repeat that Sunday for a season and you have a summer.
This is a look at how those pieces fit, with the specific dates, hours, and names you need to plan around.
Sunday morning starts on Washington Street
The Haymarket Farmers Market is the one recurring event that sets the cadence of a summer week here. The Town confirms the market runs Sundays from 9 AM to 1 PM, returning for the 2026 season and continuing through November 15, with vendors selling farm produce, baked goods, and handmade items at 15000 Washington Street.
Two practical notes worth knowing before you go:
- It is a Sunday market, not Saturday. Visitors coming from farther out sometimes get this wrong because most Northern Virginia markets run Saturday mornings.
- The Prince William County tourism office also lists it, with a slightly different window of 9:30 am to 1:30 pm, from April 11th to November 21st. The Town's own page is the one to trust for the current season, but the county listing is useful confirmation that the market is a fixture, not a pop-up.
The address matters for another reason. 15000 Washington Street is the same block that hosts Haymarket Day each October and the Town's annual Summer Concert. If you learn one downtown address this summer, learn that one.
The single date to circle in August
The Town of Haymarket runs one large outdoor concert a year, and in 2026 it lands on August 17th from 4pm-8pm at 14170 Washington Street. Food, music, four hours, one block of downtown.
That is the entire pitch. It is not a festival circuit, it is not ticketed, and it does not require a drive to Bristow or Manassas. For residents who have watched the Town's calendar mature over the last decade, this concert has become the summer anchor, alongside National Night Out, Haymarket Day, and the Holiday Bazaar as the Town's four flagship community events.
The useful reframe: Heritage Hunt residents do not need to plan a "summer trip" to hear live music outdoors this year. One Monday evening in August, it comes to Washington Street.
Leopold's Preserve, learned by loops
Between the market on Sunday and the concert in August, the everyday summer amenity is Leopold's Preserve, the 380-acre nature preserve on Thoroughfare Road. It is not a county park. It is privately owned and managed by the White House Farm Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation with a focus on conservation and education, and it is free.
A few facts that separate it from the generic "there's a trail nearby" description:
- Over 200 bird species have been documented at Leopold's Preserve.
- The preserve is part of the Virginia Bird and Wildlife Trail, a state network of sites selected specifically for wildlife viewing.
- The land was formerly a farmland, the property continues to be actively restored to native habitats by the White House Farm Foundation and is permanently protected through a conservation easement held by the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust. That easement matters. It means the trails and meadows you walk this summer are not on borrowed time waiting for a rezoning.

The Wood Duck Way detail is the one worth flagging. The 0.65-mile Wood Duck Way loop trail is particularly recommended for birders, as it provides views of the preserve's extensive wetlands and features a large observation platform as well as nest boxes for eastern bluebird and wood duck. A paved path from the parking area provides easy access to the platform. If you have grandchildren visiting or friends who are not built for a four-mile walk, this is the trail you want.
Berry Pond, at the end of the short Meadow Loop, has a piece of history most trail maps skip. It was a favorite swimming hole during the heydays of Thoroughfare, a thriving Black community established after the American Civil War. Local interpretive signage on the trails picks up that story.
Preserve rules that catch people off guard
Leopold's is stricter than a county park in a few ways worth knowing before you show up:
- Access is by foot only. Bicycles, e-bikes, dirt bikes, minibikes, one wheels, ATVs, and other motorized vehicles are strictly prohibited.
- Dogs are welcome but must be leashed, and there are no trash receptacles in the Preserve. Make sure all of your trash is carried out with you.
- Public parking is on Thoroughfare Road. Entrances located within the Villages of Piedmont community are not for public access.
- Hours are dawn to dusk, every day.

The Preserve runs the annual Leopold's Preserve 5K & 10K on August 23, 2026 · Broad Run, VA... Use drink tickets post-race at the Farm Brewery at Broad Run. Even if you are not running, it is a fine morning to spectate. The Preserve also hosts recurring volunteer opportunities: Friday Conservation Corps each week and a Saturday Volunteer Day on the third Saturday of every month, both suitable for anyone thirteen and up.
Where to land after
The two downtown Haymarket restaurants that residents actually rotate through in summer are both walkable from the market:

- Olde Dominion Tavern, a friendly neighborhood restaurant and tavern. Indoor/Outdoor dining. Made-from-scratch kitchen. Private Party room. Lunch, happy hour, dinner, and brunch on weekends. The patio is dog-friendly, which is a genuinely useful detail after a leashed walk at Leopold's.
Both are within a few minutes of the market's Washington Street address. That is the whole point of downtown Haymarket in summer: park once, walk between three or four stops, drive home.
